BIA CÂNDIDO
Biography
Bia Cândido
Bia Cândido is a Brazilian visual artist and graphic designer who has lived in Australia since 2010. Her painting stems from observation and a focus on concrete themes such as the body, the landscape, and vernacular architecture.
She works with acrylic, oil, and acrylic paste on canvas, developing a practice centered on color and materiality. Her palette is intense, marked by strong contrasts between deep blues, luminous yellows, reds, and vibrant greens. Color constructs the image, defines planes, and guides the viewer’s eye.
Her compositions are direct, often frontal. Figures, vegetation, and buildings appear in a synthetic manner, with reduced detail and attention to the relationship between elements on the surface of the canvas. The use of acrylic paste introduces texture and density, enhancing the visual experience.
Her background in graphic design is reflected in the way she structures her paintings. There is clarity in the arrangement of elements, in the framing of scenes, and in the construction of space.
Although there are affinities with pop art, specially in the intensity of color and the objectivity of the imagery—her work is defined within contemporary figurative painting, with a language influenced by design, tropical chromatic construction, and everyday visual culture.
